Bethel Lutheran Church
Adult Education
Bethel's Adult Education programs are presented in the Fellowship Hall
at 9:30 a.m. every Sunday except the first Sunday of every month
(when there is a Center Service), except summer.
Usually one series of classes covers the
three or four available Sundays in a month.
September/October 2010: The Best Way To Read The Bible, led by Dr. Harry Duffey and Dr. Edward Schroeder.
Dr. Harry Duffey, retired civil engineering professor (Wash. U and SIUE), has combed the Crossings website and gathered data on his own to produce a booklet on the topic: "Law and Promise Reading of the Scriptures." Bethel member, Ed Schroeder, Crossings co-founder, has seen Harry's work and recommends it. Harry and Ed will take us through Harry's booklet. The four sessions of study and discussion focus on the Lutheran Reformation's proposal for the best "glasses" to use to have 20/20 vision when reading the Bible.
- September 12: The series begins with a question: What "glasses" do you use when reading the Bible? After a brief introduction to some historical information, we will look at a case study: Jesus and his critics on how to read Hosea 6:6.
- September 19: The series continues with a "how to" on the Law/Promise way of reading the Bible using the case study of the Lutheran Reformers debate with their Roman Catholic critics about those “good works” passages in the Bible.
- September 26: In this session, we will explore several examples of Biblicism, the widely popular "wrong" glasses (used by both conservatives and liberals) for reading the Bible.
- October 10: In the final session of the series, we will consider the question: What is the Bible's authority when reading the Scriptures with "Law and Promise” glasses?
